I have been challenged by my new amigo Jeff to prepare for a 5K. I have begun my training officially. Today was fun, but not exactly impressive statistically.
The program I am using to prepare is called Couch to 5K . It is a modest start for me, but at the same time it is a huge effort considering my inexperience. The program is basically running 3 times per week for 8 weeks progressively adding more running and less walking.
My humble time for 1 mile was just under 20 minutes. Not exactly a level of fitness to be proud of, but it is what it is. I will be watching for that time to come down.

There are a great set of podcasts that walk you through C25k.
There is a link on c25k.com.
IMHO there is no better program to get you to be a runner. Good luck to you.
The pace you have today will make you look great weeks from now. I keep detailed records of every run I do on RunningAhead.com.
You should collect first 5k times from all your readers. It'll give you something to shoot for. Mine?
42:15.
Great thing about your first is it's guaranteed to be a personal record (PR). Looking forward to being there with you, Aaron.
51:22 for my first.
Aaron, thanks for visiting my blog. You asked about the walk breaks. In my half mary I had planned walk breaks at 3 miles and 4.5. They were to drink and eat some GU's. I do drink while on the run, but I also take the breaks to just let my heart rate come down and to let my legs rest. Hal Higdon and Jeff Galloway are big advotcates for a walk/run program. Yes, I would eventually like to run the entire distance. But, for now walk breaks help me to be a better runner. And for me, that's the number one priority.
